How to size a corsetposted on 5 October 2011 | posted in Corset SizingIt can be very hard to understand what corset size you need as dress sizes vary so much and are not an accurate indication of corset size, the size of your corset will depend on the effect that you require, please see below for some advice on how to size and put on a corset. All corsets are sized by waist measurments and increase by 2 inch increments. Corsets should be ordered 2-4 inches below your natural waist measurement depending on the desired effect. If you have a small waist then you will not compress as easily, nor as far, as a person who is larger. A good rule of thumb would be if your current waist size is 26" or less to order a corset 2" smaller, if you measure 32" or less choose one 2 - 4 inches smaller than your current waist size. If your waist size is 34" or higher, then you should order your corset 3 - 4" smaller. For example if person has a natural waist size of 30 inches she should order a corset of size 26 inches or 28 inches then you could wear the garment semi closed at the back giving a 2 inch reduction, or fully closed giving a 4 inch reduction. All corsets should be comfortable to wear and allow you to breath easily. Do not lace your corset too tightly during the first few weeks of wear, your new garment should be 'broken in', whereby the fabric is allowed to take the strain evenly and the corset adjusts to your body shape and your body similarly adjusts to the compression. When deciding what size corset to buy you need to think about the look you hope to achieve and how long you will be wearing the corset, if it is for a wedding you will need to be comfortable, able to sit and breath therefore we suggest only ordering a corset 2 inches below your natural waist size. Also you need to consider the amount of body fat you have around your middle, if you have very little then there is not a lot to squeeze in but if you have a lot you can order a corset 4 - 5 inches below your waist size to achieve some fantastic results. The waist measurement is critical when sizing corsets, the garments are fully adjustable at the back so will fit any body shape. Take the time to measure your waist properly, do not pull the tape tight and measure a few times during the course of one day.
How to put a corset on. Open the laces at the back, just enough so that the corset meets at the front easily. Hook either top or bottom clasp first, then use this as a lever to hook the rest into place. You may now start to ease the corset in at the laces from the bottom. Hold the bottom half of the loops to pull in the bottom section the laces will pull upward. Then repeat the process with the top half, the laces will pull upwards to the top. Pull enough so that the corset fits snug. Once you settle into the feel of your corset, you can cinch in a little more. Finally tie the loops in a knot and secure with a bow. To start with you may require some assistance, but with a little practice and a mirror you should master the process fairly quickly.
